EXPERIENCE AND INTERESTS
Alan J. Goldberg is a Partner and President of Applied Management Systems,
Inc., Burlington, MA, a leading provider of operational management consulting
and receivables management support to the healthcare industry. Mr. Goldberg has been a Board member
and President of the company since 1985 and a Partner since 1997. He started with AMS in 1976 when it was a subsidiary of the
Massachusetts Hospital Association. He was previously Assistant Director of HARICOMP (Vector Health
Systems) in Providence, RI, an affiliate of the Hospital Association of Rhode Island.
He concentrates
his activity on the corporate responsibilities of business development, administration, and financial
management. He is the editor of the AMS Bi-weekly Report.
In keeping with the corporate philosophy, he also performs client work. His specialty areas include mergers and consolidations, corporate restructuring,
organizational change, productivity, physicians’ issues, and strategic planning.
EDUCATION AND TEACHING
Mr. Goldberg received a Bachelor's of Science in Industrial Engineering and
Operations Research from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA, where he was elected to Who’s
Who Among Students and Universities. He was also winner of the Armstrong Company national award for
excellence in industrial engineering. He earned a Master of Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute in Troy, NY. There he was elected to Epsilon Delta Sigma, the national management engineering
honor fraternity.
Mr. Goldberg is a former adjunct professor at Providence College in Providence, RI, and at
the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Graduate School of Management in Troy, NY. In 1998, he was
appointed to the Northeastern University Health Management Advisory Board, Boston, MA.
PRESENTATIONS, PUBLICATIONS AND AWARDS
In 2002, Mr. Goldberg received the American College of Healthcare Executives
(ACHE) Massachusetts Regents' "Healthcare Executive of the Year"
award, presented during the Massachusetts Hospital Association Annual
Meeting. In 2003, he received the "Distinguished Service" award from
the Health Care Management Association (HCMA). In 2000 and 2001, Mr.
Goldberg made presentations to the Massachusetts Hospital Association;
West Virginia Hospital Association; Synernet, Maine; the Cambridge Health
Alliance, and the HCMA Entrepreneurship Forum. He spoke on topics ranging
from productivity management to impacts of legislation on the healthcare
environment to healthcare design.
In the 1990s, Mr. Goldberg served as an editor and
co-editor of the three editions of Hospital Departmental Profiles, published
by American Hospital Publishing. He was asked to serve as the editor
of the fourth edition. Also in the 1990s, he was uniquely honored, receiving
the first ever special recognition award for management engineering,
given out by the American Hospital Association and known as the Lifetime
Achievement Award. Mr. Goldberg served as a reviewer for the Baxter
Foundation - AHA Fellowship awarded by Hospital Research and Educational
Trust. He has been selected for inclusion in many "Who's Who" directories,
including the original Who's Who in America.
In the 1980s, he wrote numerous articles in Hospitals,
Medical Laboratory Observer, Health Services Research, and
Hospital
Energy Strategies. He coauthored a chapter in Productivity and Performance
Management in Health Care Institutions (Chicago: American Hospital Publishing).
He has also received the Technical Publication Award of the Hospital Management
Systems Society of the American Hospital Association (AHA) for the book.
PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS
Mr. Goldberg’s current affiliations include the American Hospital Association,
the Association of Health Care Enterprises (AHE), where he was elected
to the Board of Directors in 2006, the American College of Healthcare
Executives, and the Massachusetts
Hospital Association. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors
of the Health Care Management Association of Massachusetts (HCMA) and
is past president. HCMA is a local chapter of ACHE. He is
a life member, fellow, and past elected national president and chairman
of the Board of Directors of the Healthcare Information and Management
Systems Society (HIMSS); and is a fellow of the ACHE, passing the consultant's
specialty examination, and attaining the status of Board-Certified Health
Care Executive.
