TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE
Mr. Long has over 25 years of extensive healthcare operations and consulting experience, including vice president of a 300-bed acute care facility and managing a multi-disciplinary consulting practice that provided management, operations improvement, and supply cost consulting services to hospitals and physicians with extensive expertise in both non-profit and for-profit hospitals.  His accomplishments include:

  • A hospital-wide operations improvement initiative that resulted in implementation of $6 million in identified savings.  Initiatives ranged from process flow improvements, elimination of agency staffing, organizational restructurings, consolidation of functions, supply cost reduction, redesign of fringe structure, etc

  • A multi-disciplinary effort to redesign a patient care model that resulted in increased nurse to patient ratios, improved quality of care and higher patient satisfaction.

  • Developed, initiated and managed a system-wide improvement program designed to reduce costs by $12.6 million over a two year period that relied on a structured process of review, measurement, improvement, education and training, and benchmarking.

  • Initiated patient care redesign project which focused on redefining staff roles to provide integrated bedside care and reduced indirect time.

  • Developed and implemented action plans to achieve financial targets through cost reduction and revenue enhancement.

  • Management and operations improvement assistance to seven hospitals with a total of 2,200 beds in the Philadelphia, Trenton and Baltimore markets.

  • Development of regional strategies for primary care, managed care and integrated delivery network development.  Key member of team that formulated a regional approach to primary care networks.  Managed the review of physician practice evaluations and acquisitions to assure reasonable purchase cost for practices and consistency with guidelines.

  • Evaluation, review and board approval process for major capital projects including coordinating legal, financial, and marketing and planning evaluations of projects to insure operational feasibility and consistency with strategic and financial plans.

  • EP program cost benefit review that lead to rebilling effort that netted $1.2 million in additional reimbursement and generated approximately $1.5 million annually in improved payments.

  • Brought Environmental Services, Food & Nutrition, Security Services, Medical Library Services in-house.

  • Participation in Joint Commission preparation and survey that led to a score of 98, placing the hospital within the top 5% of US Hospitals surveyed.

  • Organization restructuring, financial turn-around, primary care network development, facility expansion and operations improvement.
